We've had several friends bring in their pets for us to see. Here are a few.
In health class we compared the nutritional value of some favorite breakfast cereals. Imagine our surprise when Mrs. Moore's cereal (her healthy granola) had more sugar and less vitamins than almost every other cereal. Adam's chocolate cereal was much healthier!
Our class is participating in a program that allows students to send something that will fit into a ping pong ball into outer space. The flight is filmed and the ping pong ball and flight video will be sent back to us. Our class chose to fill the ping pong ball with some of the rock material from our 'mock rock' science project. We weighed the material prior to shipping it to California for it's big mission. The flight will be Sept 22. We will weigh the material upon return to see if the conditions in space had any effect on the weight. Many thanks to the Pongsat Program for the opportunity to excited our students about space!
In health class, we have been talking about sun safety and just how powerful the suns rays can be. To create a visual of this, we used sun sensitive paper to create images of chosen objects. We took it out to recess with us and created some interesting effects.
We had 4 Japanese exchange students come and teach us a little origami. They told us a little about the story of Sadako and the paper cranes and taught us (without using much English) to make origami paper cranes.
After our other work for the day was done, I read the Sadako story to the class and we had an amazing discussion about how she (a Buddhist) put her faith in the folding of the cranes and we as Christians put our faith in Christ. The children had great comments to share concerning this. We took apart our mock rocks and determined a few of the ingredients. With the unknown matter, we added water and let two additional ingredients settle. With the water, we added it to a evaporation disk. We were left with two types of crystals.
